Dr. E. Connor Smallwood

I grew up here in Gahanna and feel incredibly grateful to now care for the community that shaped me. After graduating from Gahanna Lincoln High School, I studied Neuroscience and Spanish at Vanderbilt University, then went on to earn my doctorate at The Ohio State University College of Optometry. Before that journey, I spent time in Nicaragua working in health clinics and schools — an experience that deepened my passion for eye care and connection.

Today, I lead the very practice where I was once a patient, having taken over for my childhood eye doctor and mentor, Dr. Peter Tencza, after his 30+ years of service. I love helping patients of all ages — from kids coming in for their first eye exam to busy professionals needing clear vision fast. I’m especially passionate about pediatric care, dry eye management, and challenging contact lens fits.

Outside the clinic, I’m a husband and dad to two amazing kids, Amy and William. We spend weekends in the garden or at the hockey rink — and I bring that same energy and focus into every patient visit.
For me, this work is personal, and I truly enjoy making sure every patient feels at ease and cared for.

Honoring a Legacy of Care

Dr. Tencza wasn’t just my childhood eye doctor — he was my mentor. For over 30 years, he cared for families across Gahanna with a calm hand and a compassionate heart.

Now retired, his presence is still felt in every corner of this clinic — in the way we treat patients, in the relationships we build, and in the standard of care he set. It’s a privilege to carry forward the practice he built and to serve the same community that meant so much to both of us.

Professional Credentials

Gahanna Is Where It All Began

I graduated from Lincoln High School right here in Gahanna, and this community has shaped so much of who I am today.

It’s where my journey started—not just academically, but personally.
It means a lot to now serve the same neighborhoods that helped raise me.

More than Just the Exam Room

Outside the clinic, I spend as much time as I can outdoors —
fishing, gardening, chasing around my kids.

These are the moments that keep me grounded and remind me what truly matters. I believe the best care comes from people who stay connected to real life—and I try to bring that same energy to every patient visit.

Family Is at The Heart of It All

Whether I’m sharing a quiet moment with my wife or chasing after our little ones, family is the foundation of everything I do.

Being a husband and dad has given me an even deeper perspective on what it means to care for others — not just as a doctor, but as someone who genuinely understands the importance of trust, patience, and presence.

That’s the spirit I bring into the exam room every day.
